October 19 marks the International Day of Breast Cancer Awareness, a global initiative supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote education, prevention, and early detection of breast cancer — the most common cancer among women worldwide.

According to the WHO, more than 2.3 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and over 685,000 die from the disease. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, often due to delayed diagnosis and limited access to preventive screenings.
Digital Campaign: Voices That Inspire Prevention
This year, we joined several women-led brands in the Dominican Republic, to launch a breast cancer awareness campaign through a collaborative Instagram Reel. The message is simple but powerful: early detection saves lives.
The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) states that when breast cancer is detected early, the survival rate exceeds 90%. Early diagnosis also means less aggressive treatment and better recovery outcomes.
One of the featured messages in the campaign highlights:
“Early detection saves lives. Know your body. Check yourself regularly.”
The collaborative video encourages women to take action through self-awareness and preventive care, breaking the silence around breast health and empowering others through education.
Why Early Detection Matters
✅ A breast self-exam helps identify unusual changes early.
✅ A mammogram can detect tumors before they can be felt.
✅ Women over age 40 are encouraged to get annual mammograms, or earlier if they have a family history of breast cancer.
Where to Get a Mammogram in the Dominican Republic
As part of this awareness initiative, the campaign shares trusted diagnostic centers offering mammograms:
Laboratorio Amadita
Laboratorio Referencia
Laboratorio Clínico Patria Rivas
Laboratorio Cimen
A Message of Unity
The video closes with a powerful message delivered in unison by all participants:
“Do your self-exam and protect your life!”
Final Thought
Breast cancer does not discriminate — it affects women of every country, culture, and background. But together, through awareness and prevention, we can save lives. This collaborative campaign proves that when women support women, the message goes further and impacts more lives.
Prevention is an act of self-love — and awareness is the first step.
